FAQs
We know from our research that Australians want to do the right thing, but most people are unaware of the complex laws for carrying bikes. Safelite is all about safety. If you have a question about carrying bikes, bike rack lights, supplementary plates, or just want some advice, please use our contact form and we will get back to you within 24 hours. We do not claim to be legal experts, but over the years we have learned a lot about the laws for carrying bikes and are keen to help.
Will the Safelite fit my bike rack?
The Safelite light board is designed to fit most bike racks sold in Australia. The mounting hole measurement ranges from 31 cm to 52 cm between inner and outer distances, and the included bungee cords with locking toggles make securing the board simple.
Do I need a supplementary number plate as well?
Yes. If your bike rack obscures your rear number plate, Australian road rules require your number plate to remain clearly visible at all times. The Safelite panel includes pre positioned holes and bolts ready to fit a supplementary plate. Requirements for obtaining a supplementary or replica plate vary by state and territory, so check with your local roads authority (such as Transport for NSW, VicRoads, TMR in Queensland, or your relevant state body).
How does the Safelite connect to my car?
It connects via a standard 7 pin flat trailer plug and includes 1.4 metres of cable, sufficient to reach most vehicle trailer sockets.
Is the Safelite weatherproof?
Yes. The panel is made from UV protected, waterproof aluminium composite, and the LED lights are fully sealed and water resistant.
What warranty comes with a Safelite?
Every Safelite panel and its LED lights come with a full two year warranty against defects, excluding accidental damage.
Why do I need bike rack lights at all?
It is illegal across all Australian states and territories to obscure your vehicle's lights or number plate. Penalties vary by state but typically include fines and demerit points per offence, and obscured lights create a serious safety hazard for you, your family, and other motorists.
