Safelite vs Buzzrack Folding Light Board
Safelite vs Buzzrack Folding Light Board: Which is Best for NZ?
The Buzzrack Folding Light Board is the most expensive dedicated bike rack light board currently available in New Zealand, retailing at $279 through Sun and Snow in Dunedin. Its headline feature is a folding design that allows the board to collapse for storage when not in use. But is the folding mechanism worth the premium price, and how does it compare to the Safelite Light Bar?
This comparison covers compatibility, build quality, attachment, pricing, and NZTA compliance to help you make the right decision.

The Compatibility Problem
The most important thing to know about the Buzzrack Folding Light Board is that it is not a universal product. It is designed to screw directly onto specific Buzzrack platform bike carriers: the E-Hornet H2 and H3, the Buzzracer H2 and H4, and the Buzzybee series. It does not fit the Buzzrack E-Scorpion series (which requires a separate AJBA light set), and it does not fit any other brand of bike rack.
If you do not own one of these specific Buzzrack models, the Buzzrack Folding Light Board is simply not an option for you.
The Safelite Light Bar is designed to fit all major bike racks sold in New Zealand. It does not matter whether you own a Thule, Yakima, Torpedo7, Buzzrack, Repco, or any other rack. The Safe Clip and bungee cord system adapts to any rack in approximately 30 seconds.
The Folding Design: Useful or Gimmick?
The Buzzrack's folding mechanism is a genuine functional feature. When you are not using the light board, you can fold it flat, which makes it easier to store in a car boot or garage. If you frequently remove and reattach your light board, this could be a convenience worth paying for.
However, at $279 (compared to $160 for Safelite), you are paying a $119 premium for this folding feature. Whether that premium is justified depends on how often you remove the board and how much storage space matters to you.
Attachment: Screw-On vs Safe Clips
The Buzzrack board screws directly onto compatible Buzzrack carriers. This is a secure, permanent-feeling connection that eliminates any risk of the board detaching while driving. For Buzzrack owners, this is a real advantage.
The Safelite Light Bar uses bungee cords and proprietary Safe Clips. While this is not a permanent fixture, it is designed to be extremely secure during use and quick to attach and detach. The Safe Clips lock onto the rack with firm, positive engagement, and the bungee cords prevent any movement at speed.
NZTA Compliance: The Supplementary Plate Difference
Both boards provide a mounting surface for your NZTA supplementary number plate. However, Buzzrack does not help you obtain the plate. Their NZ retailer (Sun and Snow) directs customers to licensys.com to order a supplementary plate separately.
Safelite's Panel with Supplementary Plate bundle ($210) handles the entire NZTA plate ordering process for you. Your Safelite arrives with the official supplementary plate pre-mounted. You are fully legal from day one.
The Verdict
The Buzzrack Folding Light Board is the right choice in one specific scenario: you own a compatible Buzzrack platform carrier, you value the folding storage design, and you are willing to pay a significant premium for it.
For everyone else, the Safelite Light Bar is the better choice. It costs $119 less, fits any rack, comes with everything you need to attach it, and is the only light board on the market that is designed and made in New Zealand.
