Safelite vs Thule Light Board 976000: Which is Best for NZ?

Thule is one of the most trusted names in bike transport globally. If you own a Thule bike rack, it is natural to look at the Thule Light Board 976000 as the obvious accessory to complete your setup. But is the Thule light board the best choice for New Zealand conditions, or does the locally made Safelite Light Bar offer a more compelling package?

This comparison examines both products in detail, covering materials, attachment, pricing, warranty, and the critical question of NZTA supplementary plate compliance.

Price: Closer Than You Think

At first glance, the Thule 976000 ($149 via Stoke Equipment Co) appears slightly cheaper than the Safelite Light Bar ($160). However, the Thule board does not include straps. To attach it to a non-Thule rack, you will need to purchase straps separately. To attach it properly to a Thule HangOn 972/974 or Xpress 970 rack, you need the Thule Light Board Adapter 9761, which is an additional purchase. When you factor in these extras, the Thule solution can cost more than the Safelite, which includes the Safe Clip attachment system in the box.

Build Quality: Aluminium Composite vs Injection-Moulded Plastic

Both products are well-engineered, but the materials tell different stories. The Thule 976000 is made from injection-moulded plastic. Thule's manufacturing quality is excellent, and the product looks premium. However, plastic is plastic: it is lighter and cheaper to produce than aluminium, and over time it can become brittle under UV exposure and road vibration.

The Safelite Light Bar is made from UVP waterproof aluminium composite. This material is rigid, UV-resistant, and designed for the specific demands of road use in New Zealand's variable climate. The aluminium composite also provides a more stable platform for your number plate and lights at highway speeds.

Attachment: Ecosystem vs Universal

This is where the two products diverge most significantly. The Thule 976000 is designed to integrate with Thule's own bike rack ecosystem. Using the optional Thule Light Board Adapter 9761, it clips cleanly onto compatible Thule racks. This is a genuinely elegant solution if you own a Thule HangOn or Xpress rack.

If you own a different brand of rack (Yakima, Buzzrack, Repco, a generic rack, or any other brand), you are relying on straps that are not included in the box. Safelite's Safe Clip and bungee cord system is designed from the ground up to be universal, attaching securely to any rack in approximately 30 seconds, regardless of brand.

NZTA Compliance: The Supplementary Plate Difference

Both boards provide a surface to mount your NZTA supplementary number plate. However, Thule does not help you obtain the plate. You must order it yourself from NZTA (Waka Kotahi) or visit a VTNZ branch.

Safelite's Panel with Supplementary Plate bundle ($210) is the only product in New Zealand that handles this process for you. We order your NZTA supplementary plate on your behalf and it arrives pre-mounted on your Safelite board. You are fully legal and road-ready from the moment the package arrives.

Warranty: 2 Years vs Thule Lifetime Guarantee

This is one area where Thule has a genuine advantage. The Thule Guarantee covers most Thule products for the lifetime of the product, which is a compelling assurance of quality. Safelite offers a 2-year warranty, which is strong for this category but does not match Thule's lifetime commitment.

The Verdict

If you own a Thule HangOn or Xpress bike rack and want a seamless, ecosystem-integrated solution, the Thule Light Board 976000 is a perfectly good choice. Thule's lifetime guarantee is also a genuine differentiator.

However, if you own any other brand of rack, if you want a product that includes everything you need in the box, or if you want the convenience of having your NZTA supplementary plate sorted for you, the Safelite Light Bar is the better all-round solution. It is also the only light board on the market that is designed and made in New Zealand.
