Our Story: A Close Call on the Desert Road

In 2016, Safelite founders Murray and Alan were travelling along a remote highway at night. It was raining, but visibility was generally good, and they could see a dim red light in the distance. Suddenly, without any indicating, brake lights, or warning, the vehicle ahead braked sharply and pulled into a rest area. If they had been travelling any closer, the situation could have ended tragically for both them and the family in the car ahead.

Being responsible blokes, they stopped to inform the family that their rear lights were not functioning. However, the lights were actually working perfectly; the issue was that the bikes they were carrying completely blocked the indicators and the number plate, leaving only a single rear light visible. The family had not realised the immense danger they were in.

Following that frightening near miss, Murray and Alan decided to take action to improve safety for motorists who carry bikes on the back of their cars. This determination led to the development of the Safelite light board.
